Cinnamomum camphora
Also known as: camphor tree, camphorwood or camphor laurel

Camphor has been used for many centuries as a culinary spice, incense, medicine, essential oils, and smokeless gunpowder. It is also an insect repellent and a flea-killing substance.

It is a large evergreen tree that is native to China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries.
It can grow to 50-100 ft. (15-30 m) tall at a slow rate. The leaves have a glossy, waxy appearance and smell of camphor when crushed. In spring, it produces bright green foliage with masses of small white flowers. The species is a hermaphrodite (which has both male and female organs). It produces clusters of black, berry-like fruit around 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter. Its pale bark is very rough and fissured vertically.

Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well drained moist soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It can be invasive in some regions. USDA zone 9-11 and is frost tender.
*The plant is poisonous in large quantities. Large doses can cause respiratory failure in children.
