Eucommia Ulmoides
Also known as: Hardy Rubber Tree

Here is a native to China, but is possibly now extinct in the wild. Typically grown as a 40-60' ornamental shade tree because of its attractive glossy green foliage and its excellent resistance to insect and disease problems.

Tear a leaf, break a twig or peel off some bark and a stringy latex-like sap appears. Rubber can in fact be made from the tree sap, but the extraction process is complicated and too costly for commercial application. But it probably would be a lot more healthy for us and our environment.

It does contain various kinds of chemical constituents such as lignans, iridoids, phenolics, steroids, flavonoids, and other compounds. These constituents possess various medicinal properties and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine as a folk drink and functional food for several thousand years. It also has several pharmacological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antimicrobial, anticancer, antiaging, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective properties. Hence, it has been widely used solely or in combination with other compounds to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, sexual dysfunction, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and neurological diseases.

Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Best in full sun. Tolerates wide range of soil conditions except wet ones. If you want green leaves on a tree during a severe drought, this is your tree!
