Pterocarya Stenoptera
Also known as: Chinese Wingnut

A deciduous tree in the walnut family that typically grows 50-70' tall with a rounded, broad-spreading crown. It is a fast growing tree that can reach 20' tall in the first 5 years. It is native to alpine forested areas and riverbanks in eastern and central China. It has rough bark and massive branches that make it as wide as it is tall creating a majestic form. The coarse foliage is typical of Hickories and Walnuts. Leaves are 6 to 12 inches long and composed of 11 to 25 finely-toothed leaflets. And then there are the beautiful 12 inch long seed clusters which start out a pale lime green which dance against the darker foliage.

Needs a large space and makes a great shade tree for landscapes. Best for parks or large commercial plantings. Develops an extensive root system. Freely suckers. It withstands temperatures down to -10F and is well adapted to the southern half of the US and the moderate coastal areas. USDA zones 6-8. It does well in the UK and New Zealand and is very well accommodated to Australia. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Prefers consistently moist soils, but established trees tolerate some drought. Tolerates compacted clay soils. There are no serious pests or disease problems.
