Cucumis Anguria Vine 30 Seeds, Edible Maroon Cucumber West Indian Gherkin
Cucumis Anguria
Also known as: Maroon Cucumber, West Indian Gherkin
Here is an herbaceous vining species of annual cucumber native to Africa with thin stems that can reach a length of more than 7 feet. It is most well known for its use in salads and pickling, so it's best landscape use is in an edible garden. The "vegetable" is the mature plant's fruit, which can be prickly when young and has a bumpy surface as it matures. It can be used in the same ways as a traditional cucumber. Uses include making pickles, as cooked vegetables in dishes, or eating raw. They can be harvested green when they reach their preferred size; however, fruit that have turned yellow are over ripe and will be tough and difficult to eat. Poor pollination may lead to misshapen fruit. To pick, cut the stem attaching the fruit to the vine with a sharp, clean knife or clippers. Harvest often to spur further fruit production.
The plant grows best in full sun with rich, slightly acidic ph soil, but will grow in less desirable soils. It requires consistent moisture for proper growth, but good drainage is also important. Keep the leaves dry while watering to prevent fungal diseases. Plants can be grown vertically on a trellis or even a wire fence, which increases air circulation, prevents diseases, and grows straighter fruits. It can also be container grown. It is frost sensitive and needs warm soil temperatures to germinate seed and grow.
This offer is for 30 seeds.
