The Plant Attraction
Magnolia grandiflora
Also known as: Southern Magnolia or Bull Bay
One of the most beautiful native trees. Although it is most prevalent in the South, its zone 6 planting range means it can grow in many northern areas, even as far north as parts of Maine, Michigan, and Washington.
It does not get extremely large in most of its range, only usually growing to about 30-50 ft. tall, rarely growing to 100 ft. They have a dense growth of smooth, leathery evergreen leaves that are 5-10 inches long, shiny on top and rusty below. It produces very fragrant, creamy-white flowers, which discolor easily if bruised but they are sometimes up to 12" in diameter! These blossoms appear in late spring and continue throughout the summer and sometimes into fall. Afterwards they produce cone-like seedpods that contain large red seeds. When these pods open, the seeds often fall from their place and hang by silky threads. The fruit are eaten by squirrels, rabbits and birds including wild turkey.
It can grow in full sun, partial shade. Cold hardy down to 10 degrees, drought tolerant, thrives in most soil types, and withstands some flooding, making it durable and ideal for the most problematic areas. USDA Zones 6 to 10. If planting in zone 6 choose a protected location from winter sun and winds.
This offer is for 10 seeds.
