Echinopsis terscheckii is a columnar cactus native to Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru.  Commonly called the South American saguaro because the growth habit closely resembles the growth habit of the Saguaro, Carnegia gigantea, that thrives in the Sonoran desert in the American Southwest.  In its' native habitiat the South American saguaro thrives in arid regions at altitudes between 6,000 and 10,500 feet.  These cacti are hardy in USDA zones 8a to 11, meaning they can tolerate temperatures as low as 10°F for short durations of time.

Mature size can vary, but these cacti are known to reach impressive heights, often exceeding 20 feet with multiple arms.  They have a cylindrical shape with ribbed surfaces, adorned with large spines. Keep in mind that the growth rate depends on various factors, including environmental conditions and care.

The South American saguaro will develop arms much sooner than the true Saguaro of the American Southwest.  The South American saguaro can start developing arms around 5' tall.  The cold tolerance of this cactus, along with early arm growth, makes it a stunner in the landscape in suitable environments and is also perfectly happy in a pot on your patio or next to a bright window.
