Vanilla planifolia, Tropical Climbing Orchid Vine for Gourmet Vanilla Beans, Live Plant
Everglades Farm
The Vanilla Bean Orchid, scientifically known as Vanilla planifolia, is a tropical climbing vine renowned for producing the world's most prized vanilla beans. Native to Mexico and Central America, this exotic orchid thrives in warm, humid climates and requires bright, indirect light. With proper care, it can grow up to 10-30 feet and live for decades, making it a rewarding addition to any garden or indoor space. The fragrant, creamy-white to pale yellow flowers are a delight, but the true treasure lies in the vanilla pods that develop after hand-pollination. These pods, once cured, release a rich, warm, and sweet aroma perfect for baking and culinary delights.
It needs a support structure like a trellis or stake to climb. Use a loose, well-draining orchid potting mix. A mix of orchid bark, peat moss, and perlite works well. Pruning is not required, but you can trim dead or damaged parts to maintain health and encourage growth. Transfer pollen from the male parts of the flower to the female parts to mimic natural pollination, very easy. It is a tropical plant and sensitive to cold. USDA zones 10-11, other places can easily keep it potted or protected.
