This is the world's largest hardy temperate bamboo, native to China and Taiwan. Cultivated extensively for its edible shoots, timber, fencing, furniture, construction, paper pulp, plywood, flooring, musical instruments, utensils, rayon, charcoal, and erosion control.

The culms can grow up to 23 m tall and 18 cm in diameter. They have very velvety fine, soft hairs and are gray-green when young, becoming deep green and yellow-green to almost orange-green when maturing. Leaves are quite small when compared to the stature of this bamboo. The short and narrow, paper-thin leaves, are 8-10 cm long and 8-10 mm wide, pale green on their upper surface and matte green beneath. It has thin rhizomes with a monopodial (running) growth habit and is best for large landscapes and gardens.

It grows naturally in subtropical climate zones, where its warm and rainy in the summer, and cold and dry in the winter. The annual temperature varies from 59-69°F with the coldest month between 33-53°F. Though new shoots are very susceptible to frost damage. In warm conditions and fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils it can spread aggressively, where as it remains almost static in cool temperate climates.
