Capparis Spinosa 20 Seeds, Edible Caper Bush, Flinders Rose Shrub Garden Flowers
Capparis Spinosa
Also known as: The Caper Bush, Flinders Rose
A useful and beautiful plant in the Caper Family, the Capparidaceae.
The plant is best known for the edible flower buds (capers), often used as a seasoning, and the fruit (caper berry), both of which are usually consumed pickled. They are offered as a sort of Hors d'oeuvre to stimulate the appetite or to increase the desire to eat. Capers are essential for several Mediterranean cuisines and many Italian dishes. They are mostly applied to tomato or wine sauces and fit well to poultry and fish.
It is a perennial winter-deciduous plant that bares rounded, fleshy leaves. The flowers, which grow on long petioles between the leaves, are very attractive with white petals and many long purple stamens. Each flower usually lasts only 24 hours, but there is a continual opening of flowers along the stem. Caper shrubs are unusual and attractive ornamentals that flower their second or third year and live for decades, steadily producing more buds and berries. It grows to about 1 meter high, with the lower branches creating their own mulch along the ground. These plants thrive in hot, dry environments and prefer full sun. Salt tolerant, too.
Zones 9-11, possibly to zone 8 with protective placement/mulch.
Native to the Mediterranean, East Africa, Madagascar, south-western and Central Asia, Himalayas, the Pacific Islands, Indomalaya and Australia.
This offer is for 20 seeds.
