Elaeocarpus Floribundus
Also known as: Indian Olive, Elaeocarpus tahanensis, Jolpai

Here is a beautiful and unique evergreen tree and it ranges from E. Asia - India, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines. Not yet readily available in North America until now....
It is a moderate sized tree up to 50 meters, though often smaller with a spreading crown. Jolpai flowers have an interesting coconut fragrance, are white (creamy white) and are always available in clusters. There are 5 sepals and 5 white petals which are divided into many frilly segments giving them the dainty appearance of small hanging skirts.
Leaves of this plant are oblong, elliptical, ovate shaped, having a pointed tip and toothed margins. They contain vitamin C, myricetin, myricitrin, mearnsetin and ellagic acid. Before falling from the tree, they will become red in color.

An infusion of the bark and leaves is used in Sumatra as a mouthwash for inflamed gums. In Malaysia, the bark and leaves are used in a poultice for ulcers and an extract is drunk as a tonic. The edible fruit is light green drupe, 2 to 5 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm in girth. Both ends of fruit are pointed, smooth outer surface having a fleshy mesocarp. Often used for pickling and chutney. The large, firm fruit contains a hard capsule (stone) protecting the seed (kernel). The stone needs to be nicked, filed, cracked or heated to allow seed kernel to germinate, however this can kill the seed if not done properly. This species can take weeks to months to germinate and If preparations are not taken then this species can take years to germinate. That goes with any species that produce seeds with a hard coating or shell.

The wood is used for light interior construction, furniture and plywood. It is suitable for the manufacture of particle board, fiberboard, and paper pulp.

Usually found on well-drained, sandy to clay soils in the wild. It is an ideal tree for the garden as it needs little maintenance to thrive, surviving well in low nutrient and dry soils (although it performs best when well watered). It has no preference to full sun or full shade and from what we understand it will freeze if temperatures get that low (to be safe, protection is recommended).
Family: Elaeocarpaceae.

This offer is for 4 large seeds (The fruit has been removed but the stone is intact).
