A unique climbing plant widely distributed across tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, Australia, and North America. It is fast growing 10'-12' with forked tendrils and will need support to climb on. Perfect host plant for several butterflies! Pinch off new growth or tie to support to control spread.
Its delicate stems bear finely cut foliage and tiny white flowers in the summer. As the flowers fade, a profusion of papery seedpods with a curious ornamental balloon-like structure take their place. Within the seedpods, each round, black seed is painted with a white heart.
It has various medicinal properties such as anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-diarrhoeal, anxiolytic, rubefacient, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsant, and anti-carcinogenic. Also works as a diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, laxative, refrigerant, stomachic and sudorific and has antioxidant activities.
Considered a perennial, however generally grown as a half hardy annual in colder regions, but may be overwintered in a warm greenhouse or conservatory if required. Prefers full sun to partial shade, well-drained soils, tolerates low soil fertility and dry weather. Said to grow in USDA zone 8b+
