Cautleya Spicata
Also known as: The Himalayan Ginger, The Chinese Butterfly Ginger

Here is a very attractive ornamental plant in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The original geographical origin is said to be from the Himalayan region: Northern India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Tibet and in the Chinese provinces of Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan. It is a medium-height ginger with lush Canna-like glossy foliage growing to about 3 feet tall. The root-crown rhizomes are relatively small compared to the size of the plant. The exotic inflorescence are yellow/orange and are highlighted by bright red bracts that surround the sepals. It is reliable and a early bloomer starting around May/June and on through the rest of summer and sometimes into fall.

It is said to be one of the most hardy of gingers with adequate mulch down into USDA zone 8a, some even report zone 7. It may also be container grown. It requires a moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil, out of the full hot sun where the leaves can get scorched. It is sometimes even found growing epiphytically in the crooks of branches and the trunks of trees in their native land.

This offer is for 10 small seeds.
