This low-growing legume vine grows 1 to 2 feet tall and bears small clusters of 1/2-inch pink/purple and white flowers from early summer to late fall. It is native to Africa, Asia and Europe and is commonly used throughout the United States and Canada for erosion control, roadside planting and soil rehabilitation. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees. It can fix Nitrogen.
It is noted for attracting wildlife. It is a perennial and is hardy down to zone 4. It grows in nutritionally poor soil and does not grow well in the shade. It makes for a good ground cover and soil stabilizer for sunny banks and slopes. It can grow rampantly and become invasive.
